Singer-songwriters will be the focus of a new Rough Trade compilation, due this summer via Mute. The double disc, titled Rough Trade Shops: Singer Songwriter 01 , will feature 38 songs from underground up-and-comers such as Micah P. Hinson, King Creosote and Diane Cluck along with staples such as Bright Eyes, Nick Cave, Lou Barlow, Elvis Costello, PJ Harvey, Elliott Smith, Tom Waits and Cat Power.

Moving from Radiohead to Elliott Smith is not an especially logical step. Christopher O'Riley recorded not one but two albums of Radiohead arrangements for solo piano-- True Love Waits in 2003 and Hold Me to This last year-- taking the melodies and moods out of their original headspace with renderings that dramatically departed from the familiar versions.

Christopher O'Riley, host of public radio's From the Top , recently released Home to Oblivion , an album of Elliott Smith tunes reworked for solo piano. O'Riley's previous two recordings gave a similar treatment to Radiohead.
