The way Chris Perez's long, blond hair shields most of his face as he sits over his keyboard echoes a shyness shared by other performers who once hid behind their locks, like Kurt Cobain and Elliott Smith. Not until after he finishes playing and begins to boldly explain his agenda do you realize: ...

Rock history is studded with deaths rooted in excess and hubris, Icarus tales that make the lives of departed stars seem like mixed blessings. Elliott Smith's apparent suicide last October was not one of this nature, though even his was fraught with its own issues.

Christopher O'Riley, host of public radio's From the Top , recently released Home to Oblivion , an album of Elliott Smith tunes reworked for solo piano. O'Riley's previous two recordings gave a similar treatment to Radiohead.

O'Riley is a classical-trained pianist who made two albums of ponderous Radiohead covers. On this similarly styled tribute, the dead guy this is devoted to seems a minor player, as O'Riley uses Smith's songs as the basis for flights of fancy that could go over just fine at Carnegie Hall. But quietly beautiful stuff like "Independence Day" have enough melody to hold your interest, and for rock
