on the verge: The Postmarks
Fronted by a girl named Tim, The Postmarks make carefully crafted pop gems in a home studio they call
"the heartbreak factory." Their debut album is due out next year on the indie label, Unfiltered Records, but they'll step into the spotlight on October 19, when their song "Goodbye" gets featured on the hit ABC drama
Grey's Anatomy.

artist picks: Weird Al Yankovic
Has there ever been a pop star as downright... well, weird as Weird Al Yankovic? Ever since he burst onto MTV and into our
consciousness with "Eat It," his breakthrough 1984 parody of Michael Jackson's "Beat It," Weird Al has been there to skewer the latest musical trend. His latest album, Straight Outta Lynwood,
takes on such pop icons du jour as Green Day, Chamillionaire, Usher and American Idol's Taylor Hicks. Truly, Weird Al's satire knows no bounds.
We asked Weird Al for a list of his all-time favorite albums -- funny and otherwise -- and he obliged with the following picks. We're really glad to see Tom Lehrer made the list.
Ben Folds
Songs For Silverman |
"The latest from the amazing Mr. Folds. Really cool guy. Really great music."
Brian Wilson
Smile |
"37 years in the making, and worth the wait. Stunning."
Tom Lehrer
The Remains of Tom Lehrer |
"The collected works of the greatest musical satirist of the 20th century. What's not to like? "
Stan Freberg
The Tip of the Freberg: The Stan Freberg Collection 1951-1998 |
"Oh, um, right... the collected works of the other greatest musical satirist of the 20th century. "
The B-52's
The B-52's |
"This is the seminal new wave album wherein we learned that it wasn't really a rock (as we had formerly assumed)... it was, in fact, a rock lobster."
OK Go
Oh No |
"New wave for the new millennium. A breath of fresh air on the radio... and come on, that treadmill video was awesome."
Raymond Scott
Reckless Nights & Turkish Twilights |
"Centuries ahead of his time."
Sparks
Profile: The Ultimate Sparks Collection |
"A generous sampling of songs from the bizarre and eclectic career of one of my favorite groups."
Devo
Duty Now For the Future |
"How can you not relate to this album? I mean, aren't we all just spud boys... looking for that real tomato?"
The Presidents of the United States of America
Love Everybody |
"These guys get my vote. Ha ha ha ha ha!!! See? 'Cause they're the... never mind."
Weird Al's latest album, Straight Outta Lynwood,
is available now in the ARTISTdirect Store, as are all of Al's picks (except of the Sparks collection, which is sadly out of print). Click any of the album covers for more information.
