As the movie Walk the Line confirmed for us, behind every great troubled country-folk legend is a great woman. June Carter Cash, the wife of Johnny Cash, was an overshadowed talent with her own collection of Americana classics. Now, four years after her death, Dualtone Records is releasing Anchored In Love: A Tribute To June Carter Cash, an all-star collection featuring covers by Emmylou Harris, Billy Bob Thornton, and Elvis Costello, among others. One particular highlight is "If I Were A Carpenter", a duet by Sheryl Crow and Willie Nelson.
The tribute record was conceived and produced by Cash's son, John Carter Cash (incidentally, John is the only child of Johnny and June). "I hope through these pages people may come to know my mother in some of the ways I have known her," John said, "that though they may read of her pain, they will see her strength and beauty most of all."
The tracklist (not in final order):
"If I Were a Carpenter" - Sheryl Crow and Willie Nelson
"Jackson" - Carlene Carter and Ronnie Dunn
"Wildwood Flower" - Loretta Lynn
"Far Side Banks of Jordan" - Patty Loveless and Kris Kristofferson
"Keep On the Sunny Side" - Brad Paisley
"Wings of Angels" - Roseanne Cash
"Ring of Fire" - Elvis Costello
"Road to Kaintuck" - Billy Bob Thornton and the Peasall Sisters
"Big Yellow Peaches" - Grey De Lisle
"Kneeling Drunkard Plea" - Billy Joe Shaver
"Will the Circle Be Unbroken" - Ralph Stanley
"Song to John" - Emmylou Harris
Anchored In Love: A Tribute to June Carter Cash is due out on June 19th.
