Get to it

MU-gettoit0223

Though its definition of "indie" remains flexible enough to include major-label-promoted artists like Sum 41, Default and Theory of a Deadman, the Independent Music Awards are starting to look less like an industry back-patting Canadian Music Week warm-up party and more like an accurate reflection of the year's best Canadian independent music. The Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, Broken Social Scene, Death from Above 1979, Metric, Caribou, The New Pornographers, Constantines and Luke Doucet are all up for awards (a complete list of nominees can be viewed at www. cmw.net/cmw2006/awards_indies.asp), and the ceremony will feature brief performances from K'Naan, Cursed and Elliott Brood (among others) as well as Indie Hall of Fame inductions for Queen West vets Moe Berg and The Parachute Club. And then, following the 7pm ceremony, you'll be treated to full-length sets from Norwegian troubadour Magnet and beloved pop romancers Stars (pictured), who'll either be celebrating a win in the Chart Magazine Best Group/Duo category or wondering where the love is in this cruel, cruel world (though, chances are, they'll be doing that in any event).

THE INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS WILL BE HELD MARCH 1, 7PM, AT THE DOCKS (11 POLSON). $20 TICKETS (INCLUDE ADMISSION TO AWARDS CEREMONY AND STARS/MAGNET CONCERT) AVAILABLE AT TICKETMASTER (416-870-8000) OR WWW.CMW.NET.
