Unwritten Law has been around for a dozen years, yet each new album by the veteran punk band seems to win the group more fans.

The secret to growing popularity is easy, vocalist Scott Russo told the Star in a phone interview last year.

"Stay true to yourself," he said. "I never once followed the genre game. . . .Throughout the years I've become a fan of different music and added those into my arsenal to truly create the best piece of art that represents me that I can."

The band's sixth studio album, 2005's "Here's to the Mourning," takes the pop punk of old into a much harder, darker place. With the help of the hit single "Save Me," it may be the most successful album of the band's career.

"I wanted to make a record that was dirty and sexy and fun," Russo said. "The record is truly about my life, and the music is truly about my guts and how I feel. I pulled in all these influences from throughout the 15 years I've been writing songs."

Unwritten Law hits The Rock, 136 N. Park Ave., 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 7 with Fenix TX and As Fast As. Tickets for the all-ages show are $17 in advance at Bookman's locations or through Ticketmaster, 321-1000.
