An album of his songs is due on a September date to be announced, via J Records. Gustavo Santaolalla and guitarist Kaki King also contributed to the film score, sources say.
Vedder and Penn have been friends for more than a decade; the Pearl Jam frontman previously contributed music to the soundtrack for Penn's 1995 film "Dead Man Walking" and also recorded a cover of the Beatles' "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" for 2001's Penn-starring "I Am Sam."
"Into the Wild," which is based on Jon Krakauer's book of the same name, opens September 21 in U.S. theaters. It stars Emile Hirsch, Vince Vaughn, Catherine Keener and William Hurt. Contrary to Internet reports, Vedder does not appear in the movie.
Meanwhile, Vedder has also contributed two new songs, "No More" and "Long Nights," to the documentary "Body of War." The former track has been performed at a handful of Pearl Jam's recent concerts in Europe.
Finally, Vedder is among the artists, authors and film stars choosing their favorite Sonic Youth songs for the compilation "Hits Are for Squares," which is due to hit Starbucks locations in early 2008.
