Slaton Police Officers Honored For Saving Family

Two Slaton police officers are being called heroes after saving a family from their burning home. The home was engulfed in flames Monday night when Slaton Police Officers Steven Bartley and Steven Wheeler arrived on the scene. With smoke billowing from the roof, the officers didn't wait for the fire department to arrive.

Officer Wheeler says, "Officer Bartley kicked in the front door and the house was full of smoke. We announced our presence. The mother inside the house answered back saying that there is somebody in here and we need to get the kids out."

Officer Bartley says, "All I wanted to do is get them to safety and get them out of that house as soon as possible and then afterwards all I could do is think about my own kids."

Officers rescued two adults and four kids from the home. They say they don't consider themselves heroes. They say they were just doing their jobs. When firefighters arrived, they rescued five puppies from the home as well.
