The grim experience inspired her to produce a documentary that follows several expectant mothers in New York City. "The Business of Being Born" examines the history and financial side of childbirth through the women's experiences, and features interviews with obstetricians and other experts.
Directed by Abby Epstein, who became pregnant herself during the filming, it will open in theaters in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco at the end of October.
"When Abby and I set out to make this film, our goal was to help inform as many women as possible about the full range of choices they have," said Lake.
Netflix's Red Envelope Entertainment arm will handle the theatrical release, and the film will join the online DVD rental firm's offerings by the end of the year. New Line Cinema will release it on DVD next year.
