A shining moment for three trainees

WITH relentless perseve-rance, three National Service trainees outshone 447 others to bag their camp’s top awards.

Law Ji Min, 17, won Kem Kepim-pinan Gemilang’s Best Overall Trai-nee and Best Marching Commander awards.

Tan Sher-Lyn, 17, grabbed the Heroine (Wirawati) award and Wan Mohd Afiq Wan Mohd Sallehudin, 18, the Hero (Wira) award.

Together with their camp mates, they recently graduated from the camp in Lawan Kuda, Gopeng, about 25km from Ipoh. They were the first batch in the third series of the Na-tional Service training programme.

The three had their hearts set on winning something since the first day of the 70-day long training programme on Jan 1.

“The moment we heard that awards would be given, I told my-self that I must walk away with an award,” said Law.

An avid sportsman, he will study golf management at the Australian Institute of Golf Management in Perth.

Camp commandant Major Mus-tafa Ismail said the three showed outstanding qualities.

“They were different from the rest – more disciplined,” he said.

Tan, from the SM Convent Tai-ping, said her company, Alpha, won all four physical activities – water sports, creative sports, obstacle race and march past.

Tan’s group of friends were girls of all different races.

“I never had any problem with ra-cial integration,” Tan said. She will go on to study mass communications.

Wan Mohd Afiq, team leader of the Bravo company, also had no problems on racial integration.

“When I was studying at SMK Teknik Sri Manjung, I hardly had the chance to mix with different races. But the moment I entered the Na-tional Service programme, I found I enjoyed mixing with the other ra-ces,” he said.

He will go on to study at the Aka-demi Tentera Diraja Malaysia.

All three trainees received their awards from Rural and Regional De-velopment Minister Datuk Seri Ab-dul Aziz Shamsuddin.
