"The music is very joyous," conductor Riccardo Chailly said Tuesday. "It's a joyous salute to New York from Milan."
The Oct. 14 concert at the Winter Garden of the World Financial Center will feature pieces from Rossini's "Guglielmo Tell," Verdi's "I Vespri Siciliani," Puccini's "Manon Lescaut" and Respighi's "Pini di Roma."
The concert will cap a North American tour retracing some stops on conductor Arturo Toscanini's historic 16-week, 59-city tour with La Scala Orchestra in 1920-21. The tour marks the Philharmonic's 25th anniversary.
The closing concert at New York's Carnegie Hall on Oct. 13 will be a fundraiser for the Friends of FAI, which is restoring an 18th-century villa on Lake Como. The Philharmonic also will perform in Ann Arbor, Mich.; Chicago; Champaign, Ill.; Toronto; Washington; and Philadelphia.
