Sov signs with Def Jam
Chav-rapper Lady Sovereign has put pen to paper on a deal with Def Jam, making her the only non-US act on the label.
Playlouder reports that the mightily mouthy midget spent time in the studio of Beastie Boy Ad Rock last week. She plays South By South West this week.
Following her Austin performances, Sov is to jet to Miami a la Will freakin' Smith - "it's for the look, I don't light it" faaack orf - to work on her debut album with some fancy producer types.
Sov's next single, 'Blah Blah', is released through Island on April 17th. It's faaackin' mint.

I like her
but she's fairly well-known for being a high-maintenance little diva, who'll routinely refuse to do a gig if she turns up and decides she doesn't like the venue.
Saw her last year at the May Day gig in Traf Square and she told the DJ "if that record skips again you're in deep shit" or something like that. Of course it skipped again, and she walked off...

I can't help feeling the Sov should have signed for a small, independent label in the UK and realeased her album twelve months ago when she was fucking hot. The album might not have sold well, but fuck me, it would have been honest and funny as fuck.
What made the Sov so special in the first place was her unique brand of cheekiness developed over years spent living on the Chalkhill Estate in Wembley. I dread to think what some of these Def Jam bigwigs are gonna do to her sound to get her to break in America.
