Aussie takes bronze in sideshow
March 17, 2006

AUSTRALIA's Nadeene Latif won a weightlifting bronze medal tonight, but she was very much a sideshow as the two women who beat her both broke Commonwealth Games records.

Canada's Maryse Turcotte won the gold with a total of 188kg, surpassing the mark of 182kg for the 62kg division.

Papua New Guinea's Dika Toua, who had been chasing only the second Games gold medal in her country's history, took the silver with a total of 181kg.

Toua's 103kg in the clean and jerk surpassed the previous Games mark of 102kg, but Turcotte then upped it twice, lifting 105kg and 108kg.

Latif's total was 152kg, equal to the Seychelles' Clementina Agricole, but Latif took the medal because of her lighter bodyweight.
