"Take that and rewind it back, Lil' Jon got the beat to make ya booty go (clap)

Take that and rewind it back, Usher got the voice to make ya booty go (clap)," echoed off the walls of the Granite State Room Monday night.

The popular Usher song, along with the sounds of classic dance songs written by artists such as Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, and the Village People, blasted through the halls of the Memorial Union Building as students took part in "Lip Sync 2007."

The fifth annual lip sync competition took place in the Granite State Room and was hosted by the Inter-Fraternity and Pan-Hellenic Councils, the two governing councils of the University of New Hampshire's Greek system. As participants in the competition, 12 Greek chapter houses competed against one another in a contest of dancing and lip syncing ability. Each of the 12 chapters was judged by six panel judges on the basis of lip sync capability, dancing and choreography skills, costume fashion sense and creativity.

Tickets were sold at the door for $5 each, with all proceeds going to the two sponsored organizations of the event: Portsmouth's A Safe Place --a free shelter in Portsmouth that provides safety for female victims of domestic abuse-- and the UNH Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention Program [SHARPP]. Other fundraising methods included raffles and the sale of paper hands that proclaimed the quote, "These hands weren't made for hurting," one of the major themes of the philanthropy event.

Cosette Hirschfeld, the chairwoman of the Pan-Hellenic Council at UNH, planned the event in collaboration with SHARPP in order to promote the work and support the causes of both SHARPP and A Safe Place.

"The Greeks really value SHARPP and what they do for UNH students, community, and staff," said Hirschfeld. "We look forward to building good relations with SHARPP."

According to a pamphlet about the program, SHARPP, located on Garrison Avenue, offers direct support "to survivors of sexual harassment, intimate partner abuse, stalking, and those who care about them." SHARPP provides free, 24-hour crisis intervention, one-to-one emotional support, and a supportive presence if you seek medical care and safety planning.
