New album due out this year (maybe)

While rumors of a Coachella 2008 appearance are still up in the air, Kevin Shields has finally cleared up some of the speculation over a supposed My Bloody Valentine reunion. In an exclusive 30-minute interview with former Make-Up/Nation of Ulysses frontman Ian Svenonious—set to air on the VBS.tv show Soft Focus next Monday—Shields says the band has been working on songs they started around their 1995 breakup, as well as some new noise-pop jams.

"We were making a record in the '90s—around when the band broke up in 1995 ... and I continued with [co-vocalist/guitarist] Bilinda [Butcher]," Shields explains. "[Our next release] is going to be this half-finished record finished, and then a compilation of stuff we did before that in 1993–94, and a little bit of new stuff. I pretty much know what the one that's going to come out this year is going to sound like because its already three-fourths done ... it sounds like what we sounded like—different but not radically different. People will go, 'Yeah, it sounds like My Bloody Valentine'."

As if that description wasn't confusing enough, Shields doesn't allude to a release date, label or format for any MBV material. According to thedailyswarm.com, "it is possible that the album will see an independent, Internet-only, Radiohead-style release, and a release date could be announced at any time."

Possible but not certain, so we suggest viewing Soft Focus to draw your own conclusions, as well as digest tidbits from members of Crass, Primal Scream, The Specials, Happy Mondays and Blur in future episodes.
