FUGEES’ PRAS CURRENTLY HOMELESS: Rapper experiences life on L.A. streets for a new documentary.
(April 7, 2006)
*Armed with a hidden camera, Pras Michel of the Fugees has spent the past week living among the homeless population of Los Angeles to record his experience for an upcoming documentary called “First Night.” The 33-year-old told the New York Daily News: "The dollar a day (budget) didn't get me much at all. You have to hustle, steal, shoplift or prostitute yourself. I chose panhandling. People gave me the worst looks. Like I was invisible and at the same time the worst person on Earth." Pras said he tried to enter The Standard hotel in the hope of a meal, but security quickly pounced and kept him from passing through. "I went into the Standard to get some food. I showed the security guards my money but they threw me right out, because I looked homeless and my money was in change,” he said. "I slept in the rain. My tent was stolen. I experienced how these people live.” "People aren't going to understand what it was like until they see it,” he added. “Human beings should not be sleeping among rats." Pras hopes to premiere “First Night” at the Toronto Film Festival in September.
