O'Riley is a classical-trained pianist who made two albums of ponderous Radiohead covers. On this similarly styled tribute, the dead guy this is devoted to seems a minor player, as O'Riley uses Smith's songs as the basis for flights of fancy that could go over just fine at Carnegie Hall. But quietly beautiful stuff like "Independence Day" have enough melody to hold your interest, and for rock fans who need dinner music, this seems as likely a choice as any other solo-piano record.
