Firefighters control Merritt Isl. brush fire

By JIM WAYMER

Brevard County firefighters today were dousing the last portions of a 4- to 5-acre, cigerette-induced brush fire that flared Monday on Merritt Island.

"It's moping up hot spots from yesterday," said Eric Kucera, a dispatcher with Brevard County Fire Rescue.

The fire was across from the Sea Ray boat manufacturing plant on Sea Ray Drive, on the north side of the Barge Canal.

No homes or other structures were in danger, Kucera said.

The fire was caused by "persons smoking near the water line," he said.
