The Virginia Tech track and field teams competed in two different meets over the weekend, performing Friday in the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. and Saturday in the Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abrahmson Invitational in Charlottesville.

At the Sea Ray Relays, both the men’s and the women’s teams showed strong performances. In the pole vault, junior Abbey McGrath broke her own school record, clearing 3.90m, which tied her for second place and improved her previous regional qualifier. Fellow junior pole-vaulter Jennifer Wade earned a regional qualifying mark with a height of 3.80m, tying for sixth place in the meet.

In the high jump, Senior Saskia Triesscheijn qualified for regionals with a height of 1.75m.

In the 100m, freshman Patrice Potts received her third NCAA regional qualifying mark with a time of 11.75, finishing 18th in the meet.

For the men, junior Joe Samaniuk won the pole vault with a height of 5.20m, also earning a regional qualifying mark. Senior pole-vaulter Brian Mondschein won the invitational section of the meet, clearing 5.40m.

Freshman Mohsen Anani earned first place in the hammer throw with a regional qualifying distance of 70.53m. For his throw, Anani was named ACC Performer of the Week.

In the second meet of the weekend in Charlottesville, Va., junior Meredith Brooks recorded a regional qualifying mark in the 800m with a time of 2:08.83, earning first place in the event.

The Tech track and field teams return to action Thursday in the ACC championships at Wake Forest.

Baseball

The Hammerin’ Hokies were swept by the No. 3 North Carolina Tar Heels in three games this past weekend in Chapel Hill. Virginia Tech was outscored 24-9 during the entire series, dropping to 14-22 overall and 2-16 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Tech junior pitcher David Cross showed a big performance Saturday night, holding the Tar Heels to only three runs, including six straight shutout innings. Junior catcher Matt Foley went 4-for-5 on the weekend from the plate.

Tech returns home tonight to face the Marshall University Thundering Herd. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.

Softball

Virginia Tech’s softball team lost the opening and closing games to the North Carolina Tar Heels in Blacksburg last weekend. Both teams’ pitching squads excelled, allowing an average of only one run per game.

Tech standout pitcher Angela Tincher pitched a one-hitter in the first game, but lost the game 1-0 on a solo home run in the second.

The Hokies came back to win the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader as Tech’s freshman third baseman Charisse Mariconda lined a solo home run in the sixth, sealing the deal in a 3-0 win.

In the third game of the series, played on Sunday, pitching dominated with neither team scoring until the top of the seventh. A home run brought in two runs for the Tar Heels, earning them the win and the series.

Tonight, the Hokies play East Tennessee State University in the State Line Classic in Bristol, Tenn. Tech returns home Friday for a three game series against Florida State.

Women’s Tennis

The No. 62 Virginia Tech Women’s tennis team won its first-ever Atlantic Coast Conference match at No. 75 Boston College Saturday. The Hokies defeated the Eagles 5-2 after losing at the University of Maryland, where the Terrapins defeated Tech 6-1 Thursday.

The Hokies won all but one singles match and took another doubles match from the Eagles. Tech’s No. 58 Inga Beermann defeated No. 80 Szilvia Szegedi 6-2, 6-1 in the marquee singles match of the day. Junior Hokie Ashley James also defeated No.114 Lana Krasnopolsky in a singles match.

Tech’s only victory at Maryland on Thursday came from James’ singles match, as she defeated Terrapin Jennifer Dent 6-1, 6-1. The Hokies have earned the 11 seed in this week’s ACC Tournament, which begins Friday in Cary, N.C.

Lacrosse

The Virginia Tech Lacrosse team dropped its home finale to the University of Virginia Cavaliers 12-5 on a storm-shortened senior night.

The visiting Wahoos jumped out to an 8-0 lead before the Hokies scored, cruising to a 10-2 halftime lead. The Hokies would outscore the Cavaliers 3-2 in the second period before the game was called with 6:41 remaining due to lightning.

Tech’s five goals were all scored by different players. Last week’s Nextel Athlete of the Week, Lindsay Pieper, was one of five players to score.

The Hokies travel to Davidson University Wednesday before heading to Baltimore, Md. next week for the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.

Men’s Tennis

The Hokies men’s tennis team ended their regular season this weekend in Durham, N.C., dropping their weekend match against the No. 12 University of North Carolina Tar Heels 4-3. With the loss, Tech falls to 12-14 (3-8 ACC) on the season as the Hokies came up short for their eighth straight match.

Individual winners included a trio of underclassmen: sophomore Albert Larregola and freshmen David Rosenfeld and Nicolas Delgado.

The Hokies return to the hardcourt to take on Georgia Tech during the first round of the ACC Championships, which start Thursday in Cary, N.C.
