Ryan Fritz and the rest of the Nittany Lions will take on some of the best teams in the nation at the Sea Ray Relays this weekend. The meet, hosted by the University of Tennessee, is one of the premier early-season meets in the nation.

The Penn State Nittany Lions men’s track team will compete this weekend in the Sea Ray Relays, hosted by the University of Tennessee. The meet is regarded as one of the top early season meets in the country. Over 2000 athletes are expected for the meet, representing 84 collegiate and 33 professional teams.

The massive field will challenge an untested Penn State team. The Nittany Lions are only two meets into their season, both dominant showings in meets with remarkably poor conditions. In addition to SEC power Tennessee, the meet will also feature athletes from Big Ten rivals Ohio State and Wisconsin. The stiff competition and southern sunshine should bring out some of the Lions’ best performances.

With such a large field, the meet is divided into open and invitational events. In the ultra-competitive invitational events, Chris Nirschel (Pittsburgh, Pa.) will run in the 5000, Ryan Fritz (Parkesburg, Pa.) will be featured in the high jump, Steve Meyers (Wayne, Pa.) is entered in the shot put, and Big Ten regional qualifier Allen Pettner (Mercersburg, Pa.) will compete in the javelin throw.

In open events, the Nittany Lions are well represented, with an athlete in almost every event. Notables include Alex Langan (Camp Hill, Pa.), who will burn up the track in the 100 meter dash, Ron Jules (Toms River, N.J.) will run in the 110 meter hurdles, and Kyle Berseth (Bear, Del.) in the steeplechase. In the field, Scott Vernon (N. Kingston, R.I.) will take on top-ranked Spyridon Julien of Virginia Tech in the hammer throw, and multi-event threat Ryan Kleintop (Slatington, Pa.) will compete in the long jump. Shawn Colligan (Bradford, Pa.) and Chris Morrisey (Ligonier, Pa.) are entered in the decathlon, which concludes tomorrow.
