Issue date: 4/20/06 Section: E-Zone
Loser is a new band that includes former Marilyn Manson guitarist John 5 and singer Joe Grah, who is known for his work with Black Sabbath, Seether, Shinedown and Saliva.
"Just Like You" is the group's first album and is direct, honest and just as catchy as any good pop album. However, John 5's guitar playing is what sets the group apart from others.
The CD begins with "The First Time" a fast-paced pop rock song about being strong when faced with challenges that life may hand you. The lyrics are raw and emotional and the guitar playing is exceptional.
The album doesn't slow down either. The next two songs are also fast and have a similar sound.
The drums distinguish "Away" rather than the guitar heard in the first song and talks about getting rid of in order to avoid experiencing the feelings of sadness or anger that go along with them.
A great song on the album is the third song, "5 a.m." A long instrumental melody at the beginning leads into the lyrics, which question why relationships are confusing at times. The song points out that it's easier to just tell someone you have feelings for them rather than trying to play mind games.
The album slows down during "Nobody Knows." This mellow song is sure to be a hit with fans and is about how everyone has their own personal problems in life that friends may not see or understand.
"Disposable Sunshine" has a faster rhythm about coming of age and losing innocence. The instrument aspects of the song have a unique sound but the lyrics get redundant.
A longer guitar instrumental marks the beginning of the next song, "Down." It's a standoffish song about how sometimes people lose control of certain aspects of their life and the need to be alone to sort through them.
The album takes a different direction with the next songs, which are about relationships and love.
"Without You (Inside Out)" has the band's trademark fast beat and rhythm and is a lament to long distance relationships. It discusses the difficulties of being apart and missing a significant other.
Grade: B+
