Beauty and fashion tips

Wisdom from Jean Godfrey-June, author of “Free Gift with Purchase: My Improbable Career in Magazines and Makeup” (Harmony Books):

• Silver really plays up a tan. Even more than white.

• Over the top? Too much makeup can really be a bummer, but being too dressed up is nothing to worry about, ever. You just look more glamorous, interesting, and adventurous than everyone else.

• Eyeliner is a thousand times sexier than eye shadow. For those who can’t put it on, get a dark eye shadow powder, lick the end of an eyeliner brush, tap it into the powder, and then place it, brush length by brush length, along your lash line, starting where you want the darkest spot to be (usually the outer edges). Keep going till it looks right. If it’s too much and you hate it, wet a Q-tip and erase away.

Furnace scene

out to downtown Spruce Pine than to check out the Fire on the Mountain Blacksmith Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Try your hand at being a smithy or watch the pros as blacksmiths from around the country converge on Mitchell County to get hot and hammered. Call 765-3008.
