King Zed Makes Winning Debut
Champion trainer Gai Waterhouse's affinity with two-year-old Magic Millions graduates continued at Gosford on Thursday when the erratic first-starter King Zed scored a winning debut in the Bridgecoast Finance 2yo Maiden (1000m).

Sent out an asphyxiating odds-on elect ($1.60 SP) the gelded son of Zeditave, wearing the stable's green and dark blue striped livery, gave his connections heart palpitations when, seemingly set for a convincing victory, he veered out sharply in the concluding stages to just prevail form his pursuers who were closing the gap rapidly.

He proved too strong on the line for fellow two-year-old debutants Bak Tao and Significo who finished second and third respectively with both runs suggesting a step up in distance would suit.

Ridden by top hoop Hugh Bowman King Zed was coming off two barrier trial wins, the latest a one length victory at Canterbury on April 21 and despite his waywardness appears to have a bright future if this performance is any indication.

A final bid of $85,000 was enough to secure him at the 2005 Magic Millions Yearling Sale by none other than Waterhouse herself from the consignment of Glenlogan Park stud which is situated not far from the sales complex at Logan Valley on the Gold Coast Hinterland.

King Zed is by brilliant colonial sire Zeditave out of the American bred mare Queen Castelli who was imported to Australia in March of 1999.

His second dam, Queen Alexandra, was a brilliant multiple US group winning mare who retired with over a million dollars in prizemoney and with a seven-furlong track record to her credit.

Gulfstream Park stakes winner Sherry Jen, the fifth dam to appear on his page and a paternal male-line descendant of legendary French sire Ajax, was a prolific producing mare with fifteen foals to race of which twelve were winners.
