Rock/Pop: The Zutons
MICHAEL MacLENNAN May 11 2006
Thu May 11, 7pm, Aberdeen Music Hall, £16, 01224 641122; Fri 12, 7pm, Greenock Town Hall, £16, 0870 169 0100

The Beatles, Echo and the Bunnymen, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, er, Cast, that ginger one from Atomic Kitten... Liverpool has a long and illustrious reputation for its musical output. So it's little surprise that another of its bands, the Zutons, has started to seep into the nation's consciousness, with their 1950s dance-floor-inspired eclectic pop meltdown.
Debut album Who Killed the Zutons? didn't have an immediate impact upon its 2004 release, and at first the band were placed alongside peers and neighbours the Coral, whose voracious musical output also takes in a variety of genre.
However, the Zutons had a greater musical accessibility, thanks to a tendency towards breezy pop and insanely catchy choruses, meaning that singles such as You Will You Won't and Pressure Point (alongside some attention-grabbing festival performances and a Mercury Music Prize nomination) saw them eventually sell more than 600,000 copies of their debut.
Now they're back with second album, Tired of Hangin' Around, and it's unlikely that experiences of supporting U2, Oasis and REM will have harmed their live show.
Still only in their early 20s, the Zutons could be on their way to a long and exciting musical career, or be a short-lived Scouse novelty. You'll get the chance to find out this weekend.
