Origin team in stitches

Steve Ricketts and Steve Mascord

May 17, 2006

QUEENSLAND State of Origin legend Allan "Alfie" Langer had the players in stitches at "Camp Maroon" at Coolum on Monday night, but it was skipper Darren Lockyer who needed stitches after a fall on the way to the toilet.

The Queensland team's bonding session featured anecdotes from former Origin greats Langer, Chris Close, Paul Vautin, John Ribot and Trevor Gillmeister, with Langer proving the star turn because of his ability to spin a yarn.

Lockyer came to grief on a trip to the outside toilet at the function centre, slipping on the rain-soaked path and hitting his head.

"It was a freak accident," team medical officer Dr Roy Saunders said yesterday.

"Locky slipped on the wet surface and came crashing down with a thud. He needed three stitches (above his right eye) but he's fine and he trained without any problems."

Team media officer Ben Ikin said all the players were in bed by 1am with the team dinner and function held away from the rest of the guests at the resort. "None of the players turned into pumpkins," Ikin said.

The side trained for two hours yesterday morning and played golf in the afternoon.

Today the players will travel to Maryborough where they will hold a fan day at Eskdale Park before attending a fundraising dinner.

They will then watch the Anthony Mundine-Danny Green fight at a local pub.

Queensland forward Nate Myles, one of seven rookies in the side, said Monday night's get-together had been the perfect ice-breaker.

"Everyone started to open up a bit," Myles said. "There were a few jokes flying around. They're a fantastic bunch of blokes and it feels good to be a part of it.

"But it made me very nervous standing beside Alfie having a beer and thinking 'what's happening here?' You think you've won a prize to get in here. It's fantastic."

Gillmeister backed coach Mal Meninga's call for the Queenslanders to be more aggressive this year.

"I think we've been too nice in the last couple of years, to tell the truth," he said.
