"The idea is that I really want to meet and party with Lady Sovereign after she performs in my hometown of San Francisco on June 9th, 2006," Slow writes in the site's FAQs. "I want you guys to decide what we do on our night out together--so to make the night more fun, I'll only be spending money on her that you guys donate to this project."
Slow--who says he's "older than Lady Sovereign, but younger than M.I.A...around the same age as Kris Kross"--claims he is not a stalker and explains, "I don't want to date her. As a matter of fact I've never been good at relationships. This is just strictly partying for 6 or so hours and having a great time."
Slow was inspired to start his website after watching Lady Sovereign perform at California's Coachella Festival on April 29. He launched the website on May 8 and has raised more than $450 so far, as of this writing.
Lady Sovereign, whose real name is Louise Harman, is a breakout star of the U.K. "grime" scene and the first British rapper to land a major-label U.S. deal (with Def Jam, after Jay-Z discovered her and took her under his wing). She has released one domestic EP, Vertically Challenged, and is working on her full-length debut with a reported who's-who of American hip-hop. She is also currently touring with U.K. rapper the Streets (aka Mike Skinner), who gave her her first big break in England when she rapped on one of his remixes.
Lady Sovereign has not yet confirmed whether she will accept a date with Zach Slow, but if the two do hit the town together, Slow promises he will post photos of their big night out on his website. And if she declines his invite, he assures all those who donated to his cause that he will "use the money to fund another creative endeavor like this."
