Billy Talent, Kardinal up for MuchMusic video honours

Rock quartet Billy Talent, rapper Kardinal Offishall and R&B singer Massari lead the list of nominees for the 17th annual MuchMusic Video Awards.


Rapper and music producer Kardinal Offishall has scored a leading five nominations for the MuchMusic Video Awards. He is tied at the top with rockers Billy Talent and singer Massari. (Andrew MacNaughtan/MuchMusic)

Billy Talent won acclaim for its song Devil in A Midnight Mass, which is nominated in five categories, including best video.

Offishall, who also scored five nominations, is another best video nominee for his song Everyday (Rudebwoy). Rounding out the category are Buck 65's Devil's Eyes, Nickelback's Photograph and So She's Leaving by The Trews.

Offishall is up against Massari and his song Be Easy in the best pop video category. Other best pop video candidates are Bedouin Soundclash (Shelter), City And Colour (Save Your Scissors) and Hot Hot Heat (Middle of Nowhere).

Other categories specifically honour rap, rock, independent and French music videos.

The MuchMusic awards also honour international artists. This year's nominees include:

  • Kelly Clarkson, Behind These Hazel Eyes
  • Madonna, Hung Up

  • Rihanna, S.O.S. (Rescue Me)
  • Sean Paul, Temperature

Best international video, group:

  • Angels And Airwaves, The Adventure
  • Fall Out Boy, Dance, Dance
  • Franz Ferdinand, Do You Want To
  • Green Day, Jesus Of Suburbia
  • Green Day, Wake Me Up When September Ends
  • Panic! At The Disco, I Write Sins Not Tragedies
  • Pussycat Dolls, Don't Cha
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dani California
  • The All American Rejects, Dirty Little Secret
  • The Black Eyed Peas, My Humps

Altogether, organizers will present awards in 16 categories, four of which are people's choice prizes voted on by fans: favourite Canadian artist, favourite Canadian group, favourite international artist and favourite international group.

The four people's choice awards can be voted on via MuchMusic's website.

The Canadian music channel's free-wheeling annual awards ceremony takes over the downtown Toronto intersection of Queen and John Streets, where the MuchMusic headquarters are located.

The concert-like event typically draws thousands of music fans, autograph seekers and onlookers for red carpet parades by celebrities and indoor and outdoor musical performances.

The MuchMusic Video Awards will take place in Toronto on June 18 and air live on MuchMusic and other CHUM network radio and television properties.
