Single Reviews - Part 1 (The Spinto Band, Calexico, Hideaway)
Wednesday, 31 May, 2006
Single Reviews The Spinto Band: ‘Did I Tell you’Even Daniel Radcliffe’s a fan of this hot hot band, whose latest single is full of sliding vocals, off-beat rhythms and catchy guitar licks. Its mod-esque verses build towards a vibrant chorus and the song exudes energy through its sporadic drum beats and appealing melodies. The track has a real power-pop feeling to it, albeit in a more ‘alternative’ form and is highly reminiscent of Phantom Planet’s early work, particularly through its bright guitar solo towards the end. Overall, a highly satisfying, catchy Summer ‘break up’ song disguised as a pretty funky rock song. 4/5 - HD

Calexico: ‘Bisbee Blue’This single, from Calexico’s latest album ‘Garden Ruin,’ is a real grower. ‘Bisbee Blue’ is a soothing alt-country ballad, and a perfect antidote to that summer heat. The nuances of Joey Burns’ voice remind me of James Taylor, and you’ve got to love the banjo. Nearly ten years since the first record, it’s great to hear that Calexico, with their current enlarged line-up, are going stronger than ever. 3.5/5 - RB

Hideaway: Delays - ‘Hideaway’ is a pop-tastic indie mixture of high pitched melodies and tuneful whining, so much so that you could be forgiven for thinking, at points, that lead singer Greg Gilbert is actually female. His unique singing voice combined with a toe-tapping catchy chorus means that the single is as difficult to ignore as a transvestite on an elephant. 4/5 - CW
