Pack's Cassidy vaults into 13th place at NCAAs

Steady Nevada senior John Cassidy became a birdie machine halfway through his second round of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships, moving into the top 15 on Thursday in Sunriver, Ore.

Cassidy, who parred 16 of 18 holes in the first round, lit up the first half of the front nine (he started on the back nine) at the Crosswater Club. The senior birdied four of five holes to shoot a 3-under 69. His 36-hole total of 141 vaulted him into a 13th-place tie.

Wake Forest's Kyle Reifers followed a 65 with a 70 and leads at 135.

Nevada's 14-over total for 36 holes is 25th best, 27 shots behind leader Washington. The Pack trails 15th-place UNLV and Coastal Carolina by seven strokes. Only the top 15 teams after today's third round qualify for Saturday's final round.

Senior Casey Watabu, who led the Pack with a 70 in the opening round, had his worst round in weeks with a 75. Watabu's scorecard was littered with three bogeys on the front side, but he fought back to 1 over late in his round. But the NCAA Western Regional co-medalist bogeyed two of his final three holes as dusk approached.

Watabu is tied for 42nd at 145.

Pack senior Adam Hagen bettered his first round by three strokes with a 73. Matt Rippy and Dustin Hall improved on their opening rounds by a stroke with identical 77s.
