A 6-year-old boy died late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, before the start of his last day of kindergarten.

Dakota Cassidy, 7221 Candletree Lane, Apt. 86, was a student at Morley Elementary School.

His mother, Angela Cassidy, called 911 about 5 a.m. Thursday after discovering her son wasn’t breathing, said Lincoln Police Capt. Allen Soukup.

Morley Principal Coni Schwartz said Dakota had “very challenging” special needs but was in the regular classroom with specialists who helped him.

“The children were all very fond of him,” she said.

He was not in school Wednesday, and Thursday morning his grandmother called to say he had died during the night, Schwartz said.

Because school officials were unable to talk to the mother until later in the day to confirm what happened, school officials did not send a note home with students.
