Maund plays it ice cool over Chariot's chances

By CRAIG YOUNG EAGLE FARM
June 4, 2006

TOOWOOMBA horseman Ron Maund has issued a warning to punters gearing up to back emerging stayer Ice Chariot in next week's Queensland Derby.

"If I am not happy with how the horse is going I will not start him," Maund said after Ice Chariot roared up derby betting charts with a last-to-first win in yesterday's Grand Prix Stakes at Eagle Farm.

"It is not my usual tough nag but he is good.

"It goes against my grain to run him next week but how can you turn your back on the derby."

Maund said Ice Chariot would have a light week of work before doing "a bit of pacework on Thursday" at which point the trainer will know if the derby is a realistic option.

Ice Chariot dominated betting on the Grand Prix at $3.80, with favourite backers treated to an ultra cold ride from Maund's stable jockey Glenn Lynch.

"I wasn't worried," Lynch said.

"I've said all along he will stay all day. He stays like a mother-in-law."

Maund was asked what he thought at the halfway mark when Ice Chariot had no runners behind him and the trainer replied: "I thought he is going to have to be everything we thought he was to win".

"It was an exciting win," Maund said.

Lynch didn't have the same concerns about Ice Chariot as Maund, with the jockey saying: "I'm quite happy with him. He settled today, showed he'll stay the derby distance and it was three weeks between runs".

Maund is worried about Ice Chariot's fragile make-up, with the astute trainer saying: "You are looking at a very delicate horse. I trained his mother and she was delicate. She was a sprinter too".

Ice Chariot was purchased for $37,500 as a yearling and Maund believes the three-year-old is a full 12 months away from fully maturing.

"Most of my horses are as tough as flint but I've cuddled this horse, looked after him," Maund said.

"He is a special horse. He has a titanic finish. He has a gear in him very few horses have. And he'll win a good race one day. It might not be the derby but he'll win a good one."

Ice Chariot breezed past the Kevin Moses-trained Kincharm, which was parked just off leader Master Denis by jockey Jim Cassidy.

"He has done a good job to hang on like he did after racing on a solid pace," Cassidy said. "That's how he needs to be ridden, with a bit of aggression."

The Clarry Conners-trained Just Grand ($17) was doing his best work late in what was another fine derby trial.
