MICHAEL MACLENNAN May 25 2006
Union of Knives
Thu 25, 7pm, Raigmore Motel, Inverness, 01463 221546, £6; Sat 27, 8pm, King Tut's, Glasgow, £6, 0870 169 0100; Sun 28, 7pm, Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh, £5, 0131 220 6176

Why would knives need a union? What could they be worried about? Chopsticks? People eating with their fingers? I'm sure they'd be finely represented by the aforementioned Glasgow-based quartet, who are taking their Death in Vegas-inspired electro-rock squall around the country. Dare you resist?

Down
Sat 27, 7pm, ABC, Glasgow, £15.00, 0870 169 0100

Guitars so heavy they'll crush every bone in your body, the bass detuned until it shakes your eyeballs out of the sockets, drums designed to pulverise your already-tender frame into a pink gooey mass, and shredded vocals that make a jackhammer sound like soothing Peruvian pan-pipe elevator muzak by comparison. If this is your idea of a good time, go and see Down!

Girls Aloud
Fri 26, 7.30pm, SECC, Glasgow, £24, 0870 040 4000 (returns only)

Two groups of graduates from the Simon Cowell Pop Finishing School grace the SECC; but you'll be lucky to grab a ticket for Girls Aloud. Their predilection for perky singalongs means that they have seen off bland peers such as Popstar rivals One True Voice, and shaken off the reality-TV tag with verve.

G4
Sun 28, 7.30pm, SECC, Glasgow, £27.50, 0870 040 4000

While the girls just wanna have fun, there is an air of desperation about those cod-operatic buffoons G4, as that whiff of novelty became putrid faster than you could say Chico Time. The boys ran the London marathon, which is fitting, given that their performances are an endurance test for the audience. Do they have anything to offer besides their hideous and blasphemous defilement of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody? If anybody's there to find out, let me know.
