RoundupDodgers promote top pitching prospect BillingsleyPosted: Wednesday June 14, 2006 8:05PM; Updated: Wednesday June 14, 2006 11:57PM SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers purchased right-hander Chad Billingsley's contract from Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday, and said he will start in his major league debut Thursday against the San Diego Padres. The 21-year-old Billingsley was 6-3 with a 3.95 ERA in 13 starts for Las Vegas. To make room on the roster, infielder-outfielder Joel Guzman was optioned to Las Vegas. Devil Rays place closer on DLDETROIT -- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays placed closer Tyler Walker on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a strained right elbow. Walker, who leads the team with 10 saves, blew a two-run ninth-inning lead in Monday's 13-inning loss to the Tigers. He is 1-3 with a 4.95 ERA in 20 appearances. He was expected to undergo an MRI during Wednesday's game. The Devil Rays also moved reliever Dan Miceli (shoulder) to the 60-day DL and purchased the contract of reliever Tim Corcoran from Triple-A Durham. Corcoran was 5-1 in 19 appearances, including three starts for the Bulls. Last year, his first in the majors, he had a 5.96 ERA in 10 games with Tampa Bay. Orioles place Gibbons on DL againTORONTO -- The Baltimore Orioles placed right fielder Jay Gibbons on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, only two days after he came off it. Gibbons left Tuesday night's game in the third inning after re-injuring his right knee during an at-bat. The injury stems from a spill he took while trying to catch a fly ball in a May 26 game against the Anaheim Angel. The Orioles had activated him Monday. "He's a gamer," manager Sam Perlozzo said. "It's natural for him to do everything possible to get back in the lineup." The Orioles recalled outfielder Ed Rogers from Triple-A Ottawa -- just two days after optioning him to Ottawa. Rogers hit .231 in six games with Baltimore. Phillies lose Santana for seasonPHILADELPHIA -- Julio Santana will miss the rest of the season because of a right elbow injury that will require ligament reconstruction surgery to repair. Signed to a one-year contract last winter in the hopes that he would strengthen the bullpen, Santana was 0-0 with a 7.56 ERA in seven games. He went on the disabled list with right elbow tendinitis on May 13 and the Phillies said Wednesday he will have Tommy John surgery at a later date. Philadelphia lefty Randy Wolf, also coming back from an elbow injury, will have his next rehabilitation start pushed back a day or two after getting hit on the left hand by a line drive Tuesday. Wolf woke up Wednesday with swelling in his left hand. He could make his next rehab start next week at Class A Clearwater or Double-A Reading. Wolf was hit by Fort Myers left fielder Garrett Guzman's single with two outs in the third inning. Philadelphia also recalled right-hander Scott Mathieson from Reading to start Saturday's game against Tampa Bay. Mathieson was 6-2 with a 3.05 ERA in 13 starts. Copyright 2006 Associated Press.
