Bulls Shortstop Charged With Drunken Driving

POSTED: 5:31 pm EDT June 16, 2006

Durham Bulls shortstop Melvin Emanuel "B.J." Upton was arrested early Friday and charged with drunken driving, police said.

Upton, 21, was driving a 2007 Mercedes Benz on Franklin Street at about 3:30 a.m. when police stopped him for going 51 mph in a 30-mph zone, police said. He then registered a blood-alcohol content of 0.11 percent, above the state's legal limit of 0.08 percent, police said.

Upton was released on a written promise to appear in court.

The Bulls played at home Friday night against the Buffalo Bisons.
