Lacuna Coil - (Century Media Records)

Karmacode
Dave Jaffer

Sometimes (unfairly) dismissed as Italy's Evanescence, Lacuna Coil have created something enduring with this, their fourth long-player, which resists the tiredness of nu metal and puts a gothic touch on pop metal (and yes, there is a difference). Lighter and catchier than its predecessor Comalies, Karmacode is soulful, introspective and spiritual (specifically on You Create and What I See). The track that will split the critics, though, is the cover of Enjoy the Silence, which works well with the band's two-pronged vocal approach, complementing Cristina Scabbia's dulcet darkness with Andrea Ferro's intelligent, restrained harmony. Solid, with almost-greatness scattered here and there.

Fuck the critics...

They never have anything nice to say. Especially for film. Anyway, i heard of these guys when they came to ottawa about 2/3 years ago. all i knew was there was a female lead singer and a very pretty one at that i might add.

Last year I caught one of their videos and I was impressed by their pop stance on the metal goth genre. The comparisons might be similar, but all in all...it really is a different group. I would put them more on par with a goth linkin park to tell you the truth but that's opinion.

I got Karmacode a couple of months ago when it came out. I took a chance based on the video and voila...they are talented. I have yet to hear more of their older material but this being there 5th album (I think)...sounds like Lacuna Coil is just getting better. Catchy songs with a nice metal overtone, but doesn't come across as too gritty on the eardrums vocally thanks to Cristina. THe other guy singing is alright, but my friend who saw them live with Rob Zombie in montreal in April said he could do a bit more...maybe play some guitar. at least the rapper in linkin park does. Anyway, the singer is the kicker for me in the band so I like it all the way around. BTW, Evanescene will answer the world in September i heard with a new album.
