THE MIX: Picks of the weekend

June 23, 2006

1. SMOOTH SOUNDS

New interpretations of the music of Marvin Gaye and the rest of the icons of Motown will highlight the three-day, Eighth Annual V98.7 Smooth Jazzfest outdoors at the Southfield Civic Center. Sunday's Motown Tribute stars Peter White, Walter Beasley, Deneice Williams, Kevin Mahogany and Jason Miles. Other festival headliners include Boney James, Najee and the Rendezvous All-Stars with Wayman Tisdale and Jonathan Butler. Gates open at 4 today and 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. 26000 Evergreen (south of I-696). Daily, $30-$40. Weekend pass, 248-645-6666 or www.ticketmaster.com. $75-$105.

2. NO FLIPPING!

Adam Sandler is a workaholic architect who finds salvation in a magical remote that allows him to fast-forward through arguments with his wife (Kate Beckinsale) and obligatory quality time with his way-cute kids. Rated PG-13; potty and sex gags. 1 hour, 38 minutes.

3. D-LIST DOYENNE

Divisive, abrasive and hilarious to those who dig her shtick, comedian Kathy Griffin is guaranteed to take some potshots at the world of celebrity -- and her own attempts to gain access to the club. 8 tonight. Orchestra Hall, Max M. Fisher Music Center, 3711 Woodward, Detroit. 313-576-5111. $20-$60.

4. GET JAZZY ON EAST SIDE

A number of metro Detroit's top jazz, blues and soul artists are playing the free Jazzin' on Jefferson festival, which expands to two days this year. 4-10:30 today, including the Sun Messengers, and 1-10:30 Saturday, including Robert Bradley and Thornetta Davis. Closed-off section of Jefferson at Chalmers, Detroit. 313-331-7939. Full schedule at www.jazzinonjefferson.com.
