Singles Review, Part 4 - May 2006 (Euros Childs, Film School, Ed Harcourt)
Monday, 12 June, 2006
Single Reviews Euros Childs: Costa Rita - This is the second single from erstwhile Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci front-man Euros Childs’ debut album ‘Chops’. It shares the same sunny, multi-instrumental fun you would expect from his usual band, albeit a little more staid than usual. Mostly played on piano, it’s got a slight cuban feel to it, and Euros’ voice is in as fine form as it’s ever been. Although chart success probably won’t be expect for a song as fragile as this, I’m it will inspire people to check out his album, which is well worth a listen. 4/5 - JS

Film School: ‘11:11’Film School definitely create a new vibe with their music and something that hasn’t been heard recently. The overall impression is quite disconcerting, brooding and rather like a dizzy hangover, but in a good way. ‘11.11’ contrasts epic echoing guitar with short and sharp bass and the result is incredibly eerie. It’s not the kind of single that’s going to stand out dramatically, but it’s worth a listen. 3/5 - CM

Ed Harcourt: Visit From The Dead Dog’ The song opens with an upbeat Organ overlaid with some bright and cheerful strings. With Graham Coxon on guitar, the song’s bouncy rhythm is reminiscent of bright and breezy Spring weather. Whilst the lyrics are actually a lot darker than the melody implies, the incessantly catchy melody and brisk tempo will no doubt entice people towards Harcourt’s forthcoming album ‘The Beautiful Lie’. Not bad. 3.5/5 - HD
