BY DAWN BAUMGARTNER VAUGHAN : The Herald-Sun RALEIGH -- Summer camp. That's what returning for a second run on the Vans Warped Tour is like for 17-year-old Hayley Williams, vocalist for the band Paramore. "You're always excited about it and you know your friends will be there," Williams said by phone late Monday afternoon at the Warped Tour stop in Kansas City, Mo. A few things have changed since Paramore's first stint on the 2005 tour. This year they traded travel by van for a bus, which is much better, she said. They're performing on a bigger stage, too. And then there's the catering. Every time the bell rings, they're first in line. The band is young, both in the ages of the members and its history. Paramore was formed in their Tennessee hometown when Williams became friends with brothers Josh and Zac Farro. Josh Farro, 18, is lead guitarist for Paramore. Zac Farro, 15, is the drummer. Jeremy Davis, 21, is the bassist. Their music can be described as alternative, high-energy emo rock. Guitarist Jason Bynum was part of the band when they released their debut album, "All We Know Is Falling," last year on the independent label Fueled By Ramen. He left the band and was replaced by Hunter Lamb, who joins Paramore on this year's Warped Tour. "Hunter is amazing, dude," Williams said. "Jason had other things back home and chose to leave. Hunter is a perfect fit." As she spoke, Williams and her bandmates were getting ready to go on stage in a few hours. Each day's performance time varies. One day it's a 1 p.m., the next at 6 p.m. "You drive all night, arrive in the morning, get set times, sell merch," she said. Time in between is spent at the merchandise tents, meeting fans and talking with other bands. "We try to watch as many bands as we can. We'll watch our friends play, eat, take showers. They gave us a PlayStation 2 and Guitar Hero, a guitar simulator game. We've been playing that nonstop," Williams said. As she was talking, passers-by shouted out hellos. "I think I met you on Warped Tour last year," she said to a passing band member. To another, "Hey man! Doin' good, thanks." Williams said that she and the rest of Paramore are fans of tons of bands on the tour. As Cities Burn is one band they became friends with on tour, she said. "It's not really about who's better or more popular," she said. "Everyone's equal on Warped Tour." Paramore will be among the rest of the bands at the Warped Tour stop at the Alltel Pavilion at Walnut Creek in Raleigh on Tuesday. Other bands performing with the tour on Tuesday include NOFX, Less Than Jake, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Helmet, Emery, Amber Pacific, ASG, Glass Intrepid, Rise Against and Hellogoodbye. Paramore departs Warped Tour after the Ventura, Calif., show on July 11. They'll head back to Franklin, Tenn., to write and rehearse for an upcoming headlining tour. Williams penned most of the lyrics for "All We Know Is Falling." They don't have plans to record a second album this year, but want to put out a new album next year to give their fans new stuff, she said. --- WHAT: Vans Warped Tour 2006, with various artists WHEN: Tuesday, doors open 10:30 a.m., music begins at noon WHERE: Alltel Pavilion, 3801 Rock Quarry Road, Raleigh ADMISSION: Tickets are $27, and are available at www.ticketmaster.com or (919) 834-4000) or at www.LiveNation.com
