PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, March 13 (Itar-Tass) -- About 190 tonnes of fuel and up to 300 tonnes of Alaska pollack and Alaska pollack caviar are located aboard the trawler Diamant that has sunken in the Sea of Okhotsk off the western coast of Kamchatka. It is impossible to detect a fuel leakage over the remoteness of the incident site and difficult weather conditions, the regional department of the Federal Service for Natural Management Control told journalists on Monday.
The incident occurred on March 11 30 miles off the western coast of Kamchatka. The trawler registered in the port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky started sinking at 18.50 local time (09.50 Moscow time). The trawler has already sunken 15 minutes later.
Forty-six people aboard the Diamant managed to evacuate in life rafts. The trawlers Arctic Leader and Granite staying in that area saved them. The rescued crew of the trawler were evacuated by helicopter to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, they do not need medical aid.
The transport prosecutor’s office of the Kamchatka region has launched an investigation into the sinking of the trawler. According to the preliminary version, the trawler fishing Alaska pollack collided with the floes drifting in that area. A hull breach in the portside of the trawler made it sink.
