Hootie to rock for school supplies again

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Hootie and the Blowfish will launch a 10-city concert series July 3 in Nashville to help collect school supplies for children, the group announced Wednesday.

Ticket holders are encouraged to bring a school-supply item with them to shows in the Homegrown Concert series. The supplies will be loaded onto a school bus and donated to each community’s public school system.

The group started the event in Charleston in 2003 and the following year expanded it to other cities in South and North Carolina.

This year, the band is taking it beyond the Carolinas. Besides Nashville, stops are planned in The Woodlands, Texas, July 28; Fort Worth, Texas, July 29; Austin, Texas, July 30; Charleston, Aug. 18; Birmingham, Ala., Aug. 19; Raleigh, Aug. 20; Burgettstown, Pa., Sept. 1; Tampa, Fla., Sept. 15; and West Palm Beach, Fla., Sept. 16.

In each city, a business or organization will partner with the band and make a donation to the schools. In Nashville, the Hard Rock Cafe will donate $5,000 to LP Pencil Box, a school-supply center where teachers can get supplies for students whose parents can’t afford them.
