Isobel Campbell
BETH PEARSON February 23 2006
Sat Feb 25, 7pm, ABC, 300 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow; £8.50, 0870 4000 818

Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood; Kylie and Nick Cave; Jimmy Somerville and Tracy Chapman (if only). The classic pairing of feather-voiced chanteuse with gruff ruffian has found its most recent players in Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan.
In her latest outing since leaving Belle and Sebastian in 2002, Campbell has teamed up with the former Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age singer for collaborative album, Ballad of the Broken Seas. Lanegan sounds like he's the biggest, most testosterone-saturated man in the world (but looks normal); Campbell's voice is delicate, melodic and subtle.
Mutual fans, the two exchanged ideas and recordings between Glasgow and Seattle before meeting in LA to record some songs afresh, eventually coming up with a well-received album that includes a cover of Hank Williams's Ramblin' Man. Campbell is clearly relishing her post-B&S freedom, while Lanegan is tied to his recording schedule, so Eugene Kelly, of the Vaselines, will take his place for the live shows.
