Bourne selectmen take no stand on CanalSide

An insistent CanalSide Commons Task Force failed Tuesday night to persuade Bourne selectmen to oppose Len Cubellis' sprawling project above the Bourne rotary or create a policy precluding the proposed development.
Task force member Howard Crow said this is an urgent matter because the Cape Cod Commission may approve the Commons plan at its July 27 meeting and at that point the tract's value would dramatically increase.
Crow said the project would block the state's planned elimination of the traffic circle. He said the land on which Cubellis wants to build could serve the town's future municipal needs well but that construction of 300 to 600 dwellings would cost Bourne far too much in delivery of services and school needs.
"It's in Bourne's best interest to be against this development," he said. "We should try to buy the property. But we need the town's leaders to take a stand. The town needs to decide to get off its - what-not - decide to do something and offer the developer a fair price for the land; and then figure out how to raise the money."
Selectmen weren't ready for that. Selectman Galon "Skip" Barlow said he would not tell Bourne's commission representative how to vote on CanalSide or support a letter being sent to the agency to influence the decision.
Selectman Jamie Sloniecki said the issue of supporting CanalSide or negotiating a purchase price with Cubellis needs more consideration.
Selectmen Chairwoman Linda Zuern said members were "uncomfortable with taking a stand or creating a policy until there is a meeting next month."
Selectmen voted 4-0 to invite the state Highway Department, Department of Environmental Protection and Cubellis to an August session.
Town Administrator Thomas Guerino said town employees are warned about expressing opinions on CanalSide Commons to the commission. He said "benign information" is an exception.
