A shipwreck and a series of battles with pirates will be part of the action during LifeHouse Theater's presentation of "Swiss Family Robinson."

The play opens July 29 and will continue on weekends through Sept. 10 at LifeHouse's Redlands theater.

The play is based on Johann David Wyss' 1812 novel chronicling the struggles of a shipwrecked Swiss family. The family faces various survival challenges and grapples with the tension between two brothers vying for the attentions of a young stowaway.

"At its core, 'Swiss Family Robinson' is about the strength of family and how love and faith can overcome any obstacles," said Wayne Scott, president of LifeHouse.

LifeHouse Theater, which is in its 12th season, was established to perform family-friendly plays and musicals with moral messages. All actors are volunteers, and many productions include both children and adults.

Surveys of the audiences for previous LifeHouse productions have drawn repeated requests for "Swiss Family Robinson," theater officials said.

"It's always ranked very high in the surveys," said Jeff DeWitt, the play's director. "I'm glad that we have finally gotten around to doing it."

DeWitt said he thinks the play will have broad appeal.

"You have the story of a family unit that is bonding together and learning lessons about life and about love," he said. "That's something that really speaks to people."

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Fridays, 2:15 and 7:30 p.m. Saturdays and 2:15 p.m. Sundays from July 29 through Sept. 10. There will be no matinee July 29, which is opening night, but there will be one Thursday evening performance on Sept. 7.

The evening performance on Aug. 19 will offer an interpreter for the hearing-impaired.

Advance ticket prices are $12 or $17 for adults and $6 or $9 for children ages 3 through 11. Children age 2 and younger will not be admitted.

Tickets can be ordered by phone at 909-335-3037, ext. 21. They also may be purchased at the box office, which is open from 1 to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and one hour prior to each performance.

LifeHouse Theater is at 1135 N. Church St. in Redlands.
