New computer scam looks like IRS letter
A new phishing scam is hitting area computers.
According to the Missouri Attorney General's office the latest scam looks like the IRS letting the user know they are eligible for a tax refund.
“We saw a lot of these around tax time,” said attorney general spokesman Travis Ford. “It seems like they are timing this for when refunds could be coming out.”
The e-mail tells the recipient that after calculating their fiscal activity they have been found to be eligible for a tax refund. The recipient must submit a refund request by e-mail and allow six to nine days for processing.
Ford said no legitimate organization would ask for information like this and the only time you should give out personal information is if you initiate contact with the organization.
A new twist on phishing scams Ford wants the public to know about is the setting up of 1-800 phone numbers that can be used to call about problems with accounts. He said the scammers use these to try to get recipients to give out their credit card account information.
