David Byrne, Aimee Mann, Dave Eggers Performing Live for Children's Literacy

July 16, 2006
By Jonathan Cohen

David Byrne, Sufjan Stevens, Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard, Aimee Mann and Mark Kozelek are among the artists who will perform as part of the six-date Revenge of the Book Eaters tour, which will raise funds for children's literacy programs established by the non-profit 826 group.

The first show is set for Aug. 23 at New York's Beacon Theatre and will feature solo acoustic sets from Byrne, Stevens and the Long Winters' John Roderick, an appearance from the Daily Show host Jon Stewart and readings by Dave Eggers and Sarah Vowell.

Gibbard, Eggers and Roderick will be on hand for an Aug. 24 event at Chicago's Park West, hosted by National Public Radio's Ira Glass, while Mann, Kozelek and the Mountain Goats highlight an Aug. 26 show at Los Angeles' Royce Hall, hosted by Andy Richter.

Comedian Patton Oswalt will host Mann, Jonathan Richman, Eggers and Vowell at San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts on Aug. 28, while the Magnetic Fields' Stephin Merritt will join the proceedings for a Sept. 1 event in Seattle as part of the Bumbershoot festival. The last benefit will be held Sept. 7 at a venue to be announced in Ann Arbor, Mich.
