Moneen - (Vagrant)

The Red Tree
Dave Jaffer

The last time we heard from Moneen, they were blowing Alexisonfire away on a Switcheroo Series comp. I guess that was a warm-up for The Red Tree, which shows the 'neeners casting off their "underachiever" label, locking in and taking it to another level. Melodic and aggressive, this is still emo but, you know, good emo. Long titles mean no individual track shout-outs, but it's no bother because this is a good-from-beginning-to-end disc, alive with forceful fervour and a solid bit of continuity from one song to the next. We might just be witnessing some coming-of-age here.

(((My Two Cents))) - Moneen Show That They Are One Of The Better Emo Bands Around

Moneen's last album involved them and Alexisonfire playing each other's tracks as part of the Switcheroo series. That was an absolute disaster and really didn't cause Moneen to create many new fans. So, Moneen put themselves in the studio and worked hard to release an album that would cause a stir in the emo genre. Trust me, they succeeded in this task and released something great with The Red Tree. I won't say that they're not an emo band anymore with this release, but that is not necessarily a band thing. For example, My Chemical Romance and Thursday are emo bands yet they are absolutely fantastic. Moneen will be viewed as one of the better emo bands after all begin listening to this album as they have shown that they can create some catchy tunes with great technicality and musicianship. The album flows beautifully from begining to end and you won't see yourself wanting to press the skip button even once. A dazzling record by a young band with a lot of potential.
