Father Murphy celebrates 40 years
Tuesday, 25 July 2006
Father Peter Murphy returned to his church of ordination recently to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of his ordination.
Father Murphy, who has been with St Mary's for the past 21 years, was joined for mass by his mother Annie Murphy, and siblings, Leo, Darryl, Les, Jim and Dawn, at St Patrick's Church, Boorowa.
"Forty years have gone quickly," Father Murphy said, who had decided to commit his life to God by the age of 21. He spent the following nine years in the seminary, five years at Springwood and four years at Manly, as well as a period in Bathurst to learn Latin.
Once ordained on July 16th 1966, he went on to serve in West Wyalong and Braddon ACT, before spending five years at Canberra Hospital.
"It was hard," recollected Father Murphy. "I learnt more in those five years than at any other time."
After leaving Canberra, he continued on to Cooma for two years and Ardlethan for six years, before coming to Crookwell's St Mary's.
"I'm happy as a priest," stated Father Murphy. "The longer you live the more you realise the value of Christian spirituality."
Despite turning 70 on this year's St Patrick's Day, Father Murphy is continuing with his work at St Mary's.
"It's never stopped," he stated. "At my age I'm running around as if I was a curate of 23 or 24."
