Shakira, Gnarls Barkley, Nelly Furtado and other pop stars are topping the charts this summer. But are they topping the playlists of show-business professionals?
Songs of Summer:
Paul Oakenfold, Grammy-nominated recording artist and international club DJ: “Gnarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy’ is a fun song that reminds me of summertime.”
Dane Cook, comedian: “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley. “I was sitting on a beach in Maui and I heard this bass groove emitting out of a radio nearby. It was infectious instantly. I was bopping my head and feeling like I wanted to jump in my car and drive 100 miles an hour with the top down. When the lyrics kicked in I was hooked - and Maui will always be crazy.”
Susan Tedeschi, singer and guitarist: “Back Home” by Eric Clapton. “Because it deals with being a musician and touring, life on the road, missing your family and friends and getting back to them.”
Louis DeVito, club DJ: “What a feeling” by Peter Luts & Dominico. “I’ve been playing this for the last month or so and finally a lot of other guys are starting to play it. In another month everyone will know this record. It’s one of those songs that just sounds familiar.”
Paul Tollett, president of Goldenvoice, producer of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival: “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley. “They debuted at Coachella.”
Randi Millman, talent booker at T.T. the Bear’s Place in Cambridge: “Hands Open” by Snow Patrol. “It just reminds me of driving with the windows open.” And No. 2 on her personal playlist: “I’m Glad I Hitched My Apple Wagon to Your Star” by The Boy Least Likely To. “Just had them at T.T.’s the beginning of June and I remember saying to their tour manager after the show that they were the perfect summertime band. It was impossible to be in a bad mood watching them. It’s just that perfect, lightweight, summery pop.”
