MP3: Carol Bui: "Quan Am"

Jeff Buckley was once pitched to a Columbia Records A&R man as a "Heritage Artist" in the same vein as Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. It is in their shadow that Carol Bui emerges as perhaps the most singular and distinct voice of the Washington, DC, music scene. On This Is How I Recover, Carol Bui fused lyrical guitar lines with poetic phrasing, prompting Washington City Paper and WAMU music critic Mark Jenkins to write "[Bui] combines the introspection of the solo troubadour with the aggression of the rock and roll leadsinger". This is music for people who listen to records. Taken from her forthcoming LP, "Quan Am" features production by Beauty Pill's Chad Clark (Dischord) and Aloha's T.J. Lipple (Polyvinyl), who also serve as Bui's supporting band on the release.

MP3: Smoke Ring Days: "Sleeping With Open Eyes"

Smoke Ring Days lures the listener by weaving earnest songwriting, transcendent lyricism, nouveau blues, and Alt-Americana arrangements into the fabric of a new musical consciousness. Coloured by lush and haunting harmonies and soaring guitar work, Songs of Simple Dreams is a painstakingly-crafted patchwork of moving material, from the powerful protest music of "August Sun" and "Darkness on the Land" to the fragile folkiness of "Daydream Tomorrows" and the sweet sensuality of "Baby, Don't You Follow". With Songs of Simple Dreams, Smoke Ring Days creates aural commentary that spans the gamut from heartfelt emotional outpourings to well-placed political punches, as evidenced here by "Sleeping With Open Eyes".

Origo is BURST's masterwork of complex, commanding music and exudes class and the confidence of a band poised for greatness.

MP3: Circa Survive: "Suspending Disbelief"

Circa Survive is an experimental rock band consisting of former Saosin vocalist Anthony Green and members of the now-defunct This Day Forward, including guitarists Brendan Ekstrom and Colin Frangicetto. Compared to the sound of Green's former group, the music of Circa Survive taps a different musical influence for Green, who cites Paul Simon, dredg, and Bjork among later artists who have more influence on his vocal stylings in Circa Survive which are comparatively less aggressive, as well as his songwriting.

MP3: The Scourge Of The Sea: "Water Wings"

The Scourge of the Sea writes sweet golden pop music. Swiftly tilting songs surround ghostly melodies, jangly hooks recall the cover and comfort of darkness from the first time you saw the ocean, the first time you got lost and the first time you lost. Smart and literate songwriting coupled with dreamy, atmospheric arrangements don’t displace simple sing-a-longs over fractious electric guitars. Living in the heart of downtown Lexington, KY, The Scourge of the Sea features Andrew English, Justin Craig and Robby Cosenza (currently of the Apparitions and formerly of Pontius CoPilot – recently named one of Kentucky’s top 10 in Filter magazine alongside Will Oldham, My Morning Jacket, Slint and Loretta Lynn). Since forming in the winter of 2004, the band has continued to maintain an increasingly loyal and healthy following on their own, from rock clubs to art galleries, attics to festivals. The Scourge of the Sea has recently shared bills with Stars, Fruit Bats, Paleo, Langhorne Slim, Marbles, Rogue Wave and Clem Snide. The band’s releases include a vinyl demonstration single out on Paper Records and the upcoming full-length album, Make Me Armored, available July 2006 from independent mainstay.
