B-CC High School wins third place in state science bowl

Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School won third place in the Maryland Regional Science Bowl that was held Feb. 25.
The students who participated from B-CC High School were Brian Go, Matt Bar, Nick Drake, Josh Klontz and Tracy Li.
The team faced rounds of questions on biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, earth science and mathematics.
The competition consisted of round robins followed by double-elimination finals.
The team practiced each month with members of the B-CC science department faculty and team coach Deb Pober Haase.
More than 125 students from 14 different schools attended the regional competition.
Holton-Arms student singsin honor choir
Cassie Murray, a sophomore at the Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, recently represented the school in the American Choral Directors’ Association Eastern Division High School Honor Choir.
Murray was chosen among 997 audition tapes that were sent to the organization.
The selected 249 students, in 10th to 12th grade, sang 11 pieces in a variety of styles and languages, including Latin, Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew and English.
Murray rehearsed with a popular ensemble for three days in New York City and her experience culminated with a concert at Carnegie Hall in New York, which was conducted by Anton Armstrong, the world-renowned conductor from St. Olaf College in Minnesota.
Landon students recognized for Commercial Challenge
Two students at Landon School in Bethesda won third place and will be recognized at the community challenge event held by Drawing the Line at 8:30 a.m. March 16 in the auditorium of the Board of Education building, 850 Hungerford Drive, Rockville.
The high school participants produced a 30-second commercial and wrote a paper focusing on the danger of under 21-alcohol use or the reasons why they do not consume alcohol.
Their commercial was about how awful it is for a person to be sent to the emergency room due to excessive drinking.
At the award ceremony, the students will present the commercials that they produced and receive their trophies, certificates and a check for $250.

Tilden Middle School holds cluster family night
Tilden Middle School will hold a cluster family night to cheer on teachers at a charity basketball game starting at 6 p.m. on March 24 at the school, 11211 Old Georgetown Road.
Students and parents will be able to cheer on their favorite teachers at the game and the raised funds will go toward National Institutes of Health Children’s Inn.
The general admission tickets are $4 and food and drink will be sold from 6-7:30 p.m. and the game will take place 7:30-9 p.m.

Holton-Arms student receives visual art award
Senior Sydney Stasch received a Merit Award in Visual Arts from the 2005-2006 Arts Recognition and Talent Search (ARTS).
As a Merit award winner, Stasch has been placed in the top 10 percent of the 2006 ARTS participant pool.
The program identifies high school seniors and other 17- and 18-year-old artists who show significant talent in the categories of dance, jazz, video, music, photography, theater, visual arts, voice and writing.
B-CC to hostused book sale and café
The Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School PTSA will hold its annual used book sale and café from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 26 at the school cafeteria, 4301 East-West Highway, Bethesda.
The sale will feature 30,000 ‘‘gently-used” books, audio books, DVDs and videos.
The book collection includes Newberry and Caldecott award-winning children’s books, hundreds of history books, biographies, art books and cook books.
The books are priced at $1 for paperbacks $2 for hard covers and the raised funds will go to support the PTSA.
There will also be a silent auction that will show and sell 100 rare finds – first editions of American fiction to antique collectable volumes dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
