FIELD DAY FRIDAY: Mob to hit Columbus

By Brad Barnes

Punch "Field Mob " into Google, and the top match links to the hip-hop act's main page, which Google calls the "official site of the rap group from Albany, New York."

But Field Mob's 2006 record is called "Light Poles and Pine Trees" for a reason. The duo hails from our Albany. Albany, Ga.

You know, All-BEN-ee.

There's no respect, it seems, from the mammoth search engine. But with an album that's hit No. 7, Field Mob can respond by saying the name of its new No. 1 single: "So What."

Field Mob rapper Darion "Smoke" Crawford might have uber-black skin ("I was picked on because of my pigmentation," he told USA Today), the act is white hot right now.

So promoters did well to add Field Mob to the billing with Pretty Ricky at the Columbus Civic Center on Friday when Omarion dropped out.

Oh, and Google -- that's Columbus, Georgia .

Actually, promoters added a bunch of artists, which is why the show has now been dubbed The Superfest.

Here are some highlights from the rest of the lineup: • Pretty Ricky : How pretty are these four Miami brothers? So pretty that, by the time you read this, the debut album, "Bluestars," should have gone platinum. It lacked 10,000 copies last week, with sales propelled by hot R&B singles, "Grind With Me" and "Your Body." Props to the boys for letting fans name their forthcoming sophomore record via an online contest.

• D4L : The Atlanta rappers behind "Laffy Taffy" are laughing all the way to the bank, after the South's 2005 summer anthem broke out nationally. Indeed Down For Life might be set for life.

• Gucci Mane : As infamous as he is famous, Gucci Mane has been charged with murder, was released on the day his first record debuted, and is in the middle of a feud with Young Jeezy about Jeez not getting credit and/or money for work he did on Gucci Mane's big hit, "Icy."

The show also promises music from Suga Suga and the always intriguing "and others."

And hip-hop fans, if you've waited this long to get your ticket, there's a good reason to shake your laffy taffy on down to the Civic Center box office today. The admission goes up $10 if you wait until tomorrow.
